P-42: Protective Effects of Melatonin on The Testis in Post-Status Epilepticus Rats Following Lithium-Pilocarpin Injection As A Model of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE)

Authors

Abstract:

Background: Reproductive dysfunction and endocrine disorders are common among men with complex partial seizures of temporal lobe origin. More than 90% of men with epilepsy have abnormal semen analysis, including decreased sperm count, abnormal morphology, and impaired motility. The aim of this study was the assay of chronic treatment with melatonin during the latent phase and chronic phase of evolving TLE on the testis and accessory sex organs weight, sperm parameters and antioxidant enzymes concentrations in the testis. Materials and Methods: Eight groups of male Wistar rats were treated as follows: epileptic rats without any injection, solvent of melatonin (2% ethanol) as a vehicle (Sham); melatonin (5 mg/kg/daily) for 14 days, melatonin (5 mg/kg/daily) for 60 days, melatonin (20 mg/ kg/daily) for 14 days, melatonin (20 mg/kg/daily) for 60 days, sedentary control without any injection (Control) and rats with reverse injection of lithium-pilocarpine. Results: Induction of Status Epilepticus caused significant decrease (p ≤ 0.05) in sperm count and parameters. This experiment revealed that melatonin 5 mg for 60 days can significantly improve progressive motility of sperm (p ≤ 0.05). Moreover, melatonin 20 mg for 14 days and 5 mg for 60 days caused significant improvement in total motility of sperms and reduced immotile sperm. Furthermore, there was a significant reduction in total antioxidant (TA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalaze (CA) levels between epileptic and control groups. Melatonin 20mg for 60 days caused a significant increase in the levels of TA, SOD and CA. Melatonin 20mg for 14 days and 5 mg for 60 days showed a significant increase in SOD and CA, respectively. Testis weight and accessory sex organs were not statistically significant. Conclusion: It seems that chronic administration of low dose melatonin or semi chronic administration of high dose might be effective in ameliorating some consequences of Status Epilepticus on the sperm quality and antioxidant enzymes which can in turn affect male fertility.

Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor ameliorates status epilepticus seizures and cognitive disturbances in a rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy

Background and Objective: In temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), recurrent seizures accompany with cognitive deficit. In some patients, the current medications cannot provide satisfactory control of seizures, therefore new drugs that act through different mechanisms are required. In the present study, the useful effect of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor was evaluated in experimental model of tempora...

P 111: Use of Stem Cell Therapy for Treatment of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE)

Epilepsy is one of the most common neuroinflammatory disorders that affect more than 50 million people worldwide. Excessive electrical discharges in neurons following neural cell damage or loss leads to recurrent seizures, which are described as epilepsy. One of the most common and difficult to treat types of epilepsy is Temporal Lobe Epilepsy (TLE), which results from hippocampal sclerosis. Cu...

Salvianolic Acid Improves Status Epilepticus and Learning and Memory Deficiency in Rat Model of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

Background and Objective: Epilepsy is a long-lasting central nervous system disorder that is accompany with spontaneous seizures and insufficiency in learning and memory. Now drug treatment is the most common therapy but some patients do not research to suitable control of their seizures with current drugs. Hence, new treatment is needed to help those patients that are unaffected to existing dr...

P-54: Melatonin Treatment Along Latent and Chronic Phases of Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, Protects Testes Against Destroying Effect of Lithium-Pilocarpine Induced Epileptic Rats

Background: Because of the observed protective effect of melatonin against TLE and the putative role of melatonin to influence neuroendocrine-gonadal axis, we tried to find out whether initiating the melatonin treatment after induction of Status Epilepticus (SE) and all along the different phases of epileptogenesis process, might be able to protect the testes and sperm against devastating effec...

critical period effects in foreign language learning:the influence of maturational state on the acquisition of reading, writing, and grammar in english as a foreign language

since the 1960s the age effects on learning both first and second language have been explored by many linguists and applied linguists (e.g lennerberg, 1967; schachter, 1996; long, 1990) and the existence of critical period for language acquisition was found to be a common ground of all these studies. in spite of some common findings, some issues about the impacts of age on acquiring a second or...
